Staten Island, N.Y.— The John Jay softball team tallied 20 run on 25 hits en route to a doubleheader sweep on Thursday afternoon as the Bloodhounds defeated York College 9-0 in game one, before winning 11-0 in the second game. Both games were via the five inning eight run mercy rule. John Jay is now 7-5 (5-3 CUNYAC) this season.
In the first game, the John Jay pitching limited York to no runs on two hits, while the Bloodhounds registered 13, and each player in the starting line-up had at least one. Meanwhile
Nelly Vega (Bronx, NY, In-Tech Academy),
Kim Bifulco (Staten Island, NY, St. John Villa) and
Cassandra Velez (Gaithersburg, MD, Gaithersburg)had two hits each. Bifulco had three RBI in the win.
Angela Lam (Brooklyn, NY, Newtown) picked up the win after going 3.0 innings and allowing no runs on one it. Bifulco pitched the final two frames and did the same.
John Jay started the scoring in the first inning with a pair of runs, before scoring five more in the second and two again in the third to establish a cushion en route to the game one victory.
In the second game, the Bloodhounds got a run across in the first before scoring nine times in the second inning to establish control of the contest.
Sarah Balgobin (South Ozone Park, NY, John Adams) was 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI in game two, while
Krystal Class (Brooklyn, NY, New Utrecht) was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI.
Christina Perez (Brooklyn, NY, James Madison) was 2-for-3 with a double, a run and an RBI, while
Danielle Bonici (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Girls) and
Nina Chao (Woodside, NY, W.C. Bryant) scored twice each.
Chao picked up the win in game two after going five innings and allowing no runs on four hits with three strikeouts.
John Jay is back in action on Fri. Apr. 9 for a doubleheader against Brooklyn College at 3 p.m.
