Brooklyn, N.Y.— The John Jay softball team split a doubleheader on the road Friday afternoon with Brooklyn College as the Bloodhounds lost the first game 4-3 before downing the Bulldogs 18-10 in the second game.

With the split of the two games, John Jay is now 8-6 overall and 6-4 in City University of New York Athletic Conference play.

In the first game, Brooklyn jumped out over John Jay. The Bulldogs scored a run in the bottom of the first, then three in the second to lead 4-0 after two frames.

Despite out hitting Brooklyn by more than double in game one (13-6), John Jay committed three errors, leading to one unearned run to cross in the second inning.

The Bloodhounds though settled in and got on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the third. Marina Gomez (Bronx, NY, DeWitt Clinton), led off the inning with a single and later scored on an RBI double by Cassandra Velez (Gaithersburg, MD, Gaithersburg).

Then in the top of the fifth, John Jay got even closer with two more runs. Nelly Vega (Bronx, NY, In-Tech Academy), who was 3-for-4, scored on an RBI single by Danielle Bonici (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Girls)who had two hits and an RBI. Later in the inning, Bonici came in to score on a single by Kim Bifulco (Staten Island, NY, St. John Villa) who was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

But the Bloodhounds, who left 11 runners on base, never got another run across as Brooklyn held on for the narrow win.

The Bloodhounds also got a two-hit performance by Nina Chao (Woodside, NY, W.C. Bryant).

Angela Lam (Brooklyn, NY, Newtown) suffered the loss after going 6.0 innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits and two strikeouts.

In the second game, John Jay scored an abundance of runs and used a huge fifth inning to break a 9-9 tie and win via the mercy rule.

The Bloodhounds got three runs in the top of the first and two more in the second to lead 5-0 early on.

John Jay led 9-1 after two and a half innings, before the Bulldogs countered with five runs in the third and three in the fourth to even the score.

But the Bloodhounds' massive fifth inning proved too much for Brooklyn to overcome as John Jay secured the split.

The Bloodhounds pounded out 17 hits in game two and had big performance from Christina Perez (Brooklyn, NY, James Madison) who was 4-for-5 with a double, two runs and four RBI. Meanwhile Bonici and Velez had three hits each.

Bonici along with Vega had four RBI, while Vega also scored four times.

John Jay is back in action on Sat. Apr. 10 for a doubleheader at Lehman starting at noon.
