Flushing, N.Y.— The John Jay men's tennis team fought valiantly, but came up just short as the Bloodhounds, the No. 3 seed for the 2010 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) men's tennis championship, lost to No. 2 seed Hunter College 5-2 in the semifinal round of the tournament at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on Tuesday evening.
With the loss, John Jay ends their season 10-4 overall and third place in CUNYAC play for 2010.
The Bloodhounds lost two out of three in doubles play.
Josh Pagan (Douglaston, NY, Benjamin Cardozo) and
Ben Jorgensen (New York, NY, Wooster)were an 8-4 winner at No. 2 doubles, but Nos.1 and 3 were 8-4 losers before heading into singles play.
Derrick Chung (San Diego, CA, Rancho Buena Vista) was an easy winner at No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-2. But Hunter came out on top in Nos. 1, 3 and 4 singles to clinch five points to officially win the match.
Pagan at No. 2 and
Kelvin Rodriguez (Bronx, NY, Bronx Law, Government & Justice)at No. 6 had matches still going and were in great position to win their respective matches. Pagan won his first set 6-4 and was tied 2-2 before his opponent bowed out due to injury. Rodriguez lost his first set, before roaring back to win the second. He was tied 4-4 in the third before Hunter scored its fifth point to clinch its spot in the championship.
Hunter will face the College of Staten Island for the championship on Thursday at 7 p.m. CSI was a 5-2 winner over Baruch, officially ending their six year dynasty as conference champions.
