Staten Island, N.Y.— The John Jay softball team was eliminated from tournament play on Saturday morning as the Bloodhounds were defeated by Baruch College, 10-2 in five innings, in the second elimination game of the 2010 City University of New York Athletic Conference Softball Championship at the College of Staten Island Softball Complex.
With the loss, John Jay's season ends with a 13-21 overall record and a third place finish in CUNYAC play. This season also marked the first time John Jay softball won a playoff game (not including play-in games) since CUNYAC started the double elimination format in 2005.
In the second elimination game on Saturday, the Bloodhounds had six hits, including a pair from
Angela Lam (Brooklyn, NY, Newtown) who was 2-for-2 with a run, while
Nelly Vega (Bronx, NY, In-Tech Academy),
Danielle Bonici (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Girls),
Kim Bifulco (Staten Island, NY, St. John Villa) and
Cassandra Velez (Gaithersburg, MD, Gaithersburg) had a hit each.
The top seeded Bearcats, who lost 4-1 in nine innings to the College of Staten Island in the winner's bracket game, scored four runs in the bottom of the second to lead 4-0.
The Bloodhounds scored their lone two runs in the top of the third. John Jay got on the board when
Krystal Class (Brooklyn, NY, New Utrecht) lifted a sacrifice fly to rightfield to score Lam. Later in the inning, an RBI single by Bonici, the 101st RBI of her outstanding career, scored Vega.
Bonici ended her career with a .404 batting average (137-for-339) with 19 doubles, 10 triples and 101 RBI, en route to being a CUNYAC All-Conference player four consecutive years.
Baruch though scored three in the bottom of the third to lead 7-2 before increasing the lead with another run in the fourth and two in the fifth to complete the mercy rule win.
