Men's Soccer Falls 5-2 in 2010 Season Opener at Kean

Union, N.J.— The John Jay men's soccer team opened the 2010 season with a loss on Wednesday afternoon as the Bloodhounds were beaten by New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) representative Kean University 5-2 at East Campus Soccer Field. 

John Jay (0-1) fell behind in the first minute when Kean's Stephen Moll hit the back of the mesh just fifty-nine seconds into the contest. 

But the Bloodhounds tied the game at the 17:38 mark when freshman Edward Gonzalez (Queens, NY, Bayside) scored the Bloodhounds' first goal of the season. The score remained tied for about two and a half minutes when the host Cougars struck again in the twenty first minute. 

The score remained 2-1 into halftime. But Kean scored three more second half goals unanswered to go up 5-1. Abner Denis put the ball through the crease at 62:43 as Kean led 5-1. 

John Jay answered in the seventy-fourth minute when senior Steven Castillo (Maspeth, NY, Forest Hills) put one home at 73:22, but the Bloodhounds would get no closer in the season opener. 

Junior Jason Walker (Windsor, CT, Windsor) registered a first half assist for the Bloodhounds who were out-shot 16-12 in the game. After being out-shot 10-5 in the first half, the Bloodhounds struck seven times, one better than Kean. 

Gonzalez and Castillo combined for seven shots as Gonzalez had a game co-high four shots, while Castillo added three. 

Senior Kemar Brown (Kingston, Jamaica, Martin Van Buren) allowed five goals and made two saves in the contest for John Jay. 

John Jay returns to action on Fri. Sept. 3 at SUNY Purchase at 5:30 p.m.
