Jamaica, N.Y.— The John Jay women's tennis team had four individual tiebreakers in singles play and won them all and won another in a super tiebreaker en route to sweeping singles play as the Bloodhounds defeated the City College of New York (CCNY) 8-1 at the York College Tennis Complex on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, John Jay improved to 2-5 (2-1 CUNYAC), while CCNY is 0-5 (0-5 CUNYAC).
The Bloodhounds took the early advantage by winning two of three doubles matches. The team of
Ashley Marrero (Bronx, NY, Lehman)and
Lauren Mallon (Staten Island, NY, St. Savioiur)were 8-1 winners at No. 2 doubles, while
Crystal Charles (Elmhurst, NY, August Martin) and
Jessica Eng (Brooklyn, NY, Fort Hamilton) earned an 8-5 win at No. 3. The lone blemish was No. 1 doubles where John Jay lost 9-7.
The Bloodhounds first earned a win at No. 3 singles as Mallon won 7-6 in the first set after taking the tie breaker 8-6, before earning the second set with a 6-4 triumph. Meanwhile
Wilesca Belhomme (Brooklyn, NY, Tilden) earned a win at No. 6 as she won 6-2 in the first set and 7-6 in the second (8-6 in the tie breaker).
John Jay then secured the win when
Halam Katherine Seo (Queens, NY, Forest Hills)cruised to a win at No. 5 (6-1, 6-3). Moments later
Jessica Eng won 7-6 (9-7), 6-0 at No. 4.
Then after losing the first set 6-2, Marrero won the second set 6-4 before taking the super tiebreaker 10-8. A short time later
Elizabeth Cyran (Wood Ridge, NJ, Paramus Catholic), who won the first set 7-6 (7-3), finished off the second set with a 6-4 win to end the match.
John Jay returns to action on Thu. Sept. 23 at Lehman College at 3:30 p.m.
