Maspeth, N.Y.— Freshman sensation
Edward Gonzalez (Queens, NY, Bayside) registered all three of John Jay's goals, including the game winner in the ninety-fourth minute in overtime as the John Jay men's soccer team opened their 2010 home schedule with a win as the Bloodhounds beat SUNY Maritime 3-2 at the Metropolitan Oval on Monday afternoon.
With the win John Jay improved to 2-1-0 overall this season as the Bloodhounds have just as many wins already as they did all of last season.
Gonzalez's strike came off a bouncing pass from teammate
Ratko Rakocevic (Montenegro, Vaso Aligrvic). Gonzalez then beat his defender before nailing home the game winner from the near sideline about 15 yards away.
“As a team we played well together, just like we have been doing in practice,” said Gonzalez, who leads the team with five goals this season. “I love just being on the field, I'm doing what makes me happy and I am ready for us to have a great season.”
Gonzalez's first goal of the game came early in the seventh minute off a perfect pass from
Jason Walker (Windsor, CT, Windsor)as Gonzalez put home the goal from close range.
But the visiting Privateers came back with a pair of unanswered goals to take the lead midway through the first half.
James Cole scored his first two goals of the season for SUNY Maritime. The first strike came at 20:23, before scoring again less than two minutes later.
John Jay answered in the thirtieth minute when Gonzalez connected on a long kick by goalkeeper
Kemar Brown (Kingston, Jamaica, Martin Van Buren) that Gonzalez finished off before going into halftime tied 2-2.
Both teams played an evenly matched contest through the second half with neither side scoring before the match went into overtime where Gonzalez's third goal of the game sealed the win in what was a very evenly played contest. John Jay took 15 shots in the contest to 13 for SUNY Maritime.
Brown made five saves in net for John Jay.
John Jay returns to action on Sat. Sept. 11 for a match against the College of Mount Saint Mary, 12 p.m. at the Metropolitan Oval.
