Bloodhounds Double-Up Beavers for First Win of Season

Maspeth, N.Y.— Brenda Pitts (Astoria, NY, Home Schooled) and Alexis Ochoa (Whittier, CA, La Serna) netted a goal each in the first half, and the pair of goals proved to be enough as goalkeeper Marcelina Kopec (Staten Island, NY, Franklin D. Rooselvelt) stopped nine shots, and allowed just won as the John Jay women's soccer team earned its first win of the season, as the new program defeated the City College of New York (CCNY) 2-1 at the Metropolitan Oval on Wednesday afternoon.

With the win, John Jay improves to 1-1-0 overall and are in first place in City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play on the young season, while CCNY drops to 0-4-0 and are in fourth place in the four team conference.

The Bloodhounds scored their first goal of the season when Pitts took a pass from Yuri Giraldo (Woodside, NY, Long Island City)and put it right past the CCNY goalkeeper Erika Jimenez one second into the fifteenth minute. John Jay scored another one just under four minutes later when Pitts found Ochoa who put it in from point blank range.

The visiting Beavers cut the lead in half with their first goal of the season when Yanique Newman slipped past the John Jay defense and trickled home a shot just inside the left hand side of the crease.

The Bloodhounds went into halftime with a 2-1 lead, and neither team scored in the second half as John Jay is now 3-0-0 all-time against CCNY (John Jay defeated CCNY twice during the 2005 season, the only previous year John Jay had women's soccer).

CCNY outshot the Bloodhounds 14-13. Francis Tapia and Kristina Salas each fired five shots for CCNY, who have been outscored by a combined 21-1 in their four losses this season.

Pitts and Ochoa fired five shots each for John Jay.

John Jay returns to action on Wed. Sept. 15 against Medgar Evers College at 4 p.m. at Aviator Field.
