Maspeth, N.Y.— The John Jay men's soccer team is now unbeaten in its past five games as the Bloodhounds defeated the Bulldogs of Brooklyn College, 2-0 in a dogfight at the Metropolitan Oval. With the win, John Jay secured itself a first round home playoff game for the 2011 City University of New York / Applebee's men's soccer championship for the first time since the 2007 season.
On Saturday, John Jay upped its record to 5-10-3 overall (4-3-1 CUNYAC), while Brooklyn is now 1-9-2 (0-6-1 CUNYAC) and remains in last place in the nine team conference.
The Bloodhounds scored a goal in the first half, and another in the second for the two-goal win. John Jay got the game's lone goal of the first half on a strike by
Rafi Mashirqi at the 25:21 point of the game. In the second half,
Edward Gonzalez capitalized on a Brooklyn turnover and beat the Bulldog goalkeeper one on one to raise the lead to a deuce at 49:49.
John Jay played keep away the rest of the game.
Despite the two-goal win, the Bloodhounds were outshot by the Bulldogs 13-11, including 6-3 in the second half.
Rashid Allah Morad took a team-high three shots for John Jay in the win.
Brooklyn College was led by Denton Laing and Miguel Veliz-Fitz with three shots each.
John Jay's next scheduled contest is a match at the College of Mount Saint Mary on Thursday at 7 p.m.
