Women's Soccer Picks up Win over York

Jamaica, N.Y.— The John Jay women's soccer team scored a pair of second half goals, and outshot the opponent 19-2 in the contest to clinch a tie for second place in City University of New York Athletic Conference regular season standings, as the Bloodhounds defeated York College, 2-0, at York College Soccer Field on Monday afternoon.
 
With the win, John Jay improves to 6-12-0 overall this season, and the Bloodhounds end 2011 regular season conference play at 3-3-0 to secure a tie for second with the City College of New York.
 
After a scoreless first half, the Bloodhounds got on the board midway through the 64th minute on a team-leading sixth goal of the season by Bergelie Louis. Just under 10 minutes later, Jennifer Gomez put the Bloodhounds up a pair with her second goal of the season with an assist coming from Brenda Pitts who was named the conference Player of the Week earlier in the day.
 
John Jay outshot York, who wrapped up its inaugural CUNYAC schedule with an 0-6-0 record, 9-2 in the first half and 10-0 over the final forty-five minutes.
 
The Bloodhounds took eight corner kicks in the contest to five for York.
 
Both of York's recorded shots came from Christele Felix, while Cardinals' goalkeeper Vanessa Rivera made 10 saves in net.
 
Marcelina Kopec made one save in the contest for her fifth shutout of the season.
 
John Jay plays one more tune up match when the Bloodhounds face SUNY Maritime this Thursday at 7 p.m. in Throggs Neck.
