BOX SCORE

Maspeth, N.Y.— The John Jay men's soccer team was defeated by Hunter College, 1-0, in the quarterfinal round of the 2011 City University of New York Athletic Conference / Applebee's men's soccer championship at the Metropolitan Oval in front of a large crowd on Wednesday evening.

With the loss, John Jay, who hosted a quarterfinal round game for the first time since the 2007 season, fell to 6-12-3 as their season came to an end. Hunter advances into the semifinal round on Saturday where it will face top seeded Lehman College on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the College of Staten Island Soccer Complex.

In Wednesday's game, the lone goal of the contest was netted by Danny Vera midway through the sixty-ninth minute on a penalty kick. The kick evolved after the Bloodhounds were called for a hand ball literally inches inside the box. Vera netted the shot middle left to put the Hawks on the board.

The contest was a match of two halves in what turned out to be evenly played statistically. John Jay held a 10-9 advantage on shots overall. The Bloodhounds outshot Hunter 8-2 in the first half, but the Hawks held a 7-2 advantage over the final forty-five minutes of the game.

In what was a tight game defensively, neither team got tremendous looks at the net. John Jay goalkeeper, Vitecha Kochaon made three saves, while Hunter's Zade Haobah stopped five shots, three of which were put on net by Rashid Allah Morad and one each by Rafi Mashirqi and Korede Griffith.

Hunter's offense was led by Vera, who took two shots including the game winner, and Lukazs Sowinsk, who put two on net.

The match saw thirty-nine fouls, including 25 on Hunter and 14 for the Bloodhounds.
