Maspeth, N.Y.— The John Jay women's soccer team lost a heartbreaker on Saturday afternoon as the Bloodhounds were defeated in a critical conference game by the City College of New York (CCNY) 2-1 in overtime at the Metropolitan Oval.

The loss leaves John Jay at 4-9-0 (2-3-0 CUNYAC) this season, while CCNY improves to 4-5-0 (3-2-0 CUNYAC).

CCNY's Yanique Newman netted the golden goal, a mere 2:44 into the extra session to win it.

The loss to CCNY, the first in John Jay women's soccer history (John Jay is 4-1-1 lifetime against CCNY), puts John Jay in third place in the CUNYAC standings. The Bloodhounds can still claim second place in CUNYAC by via a second place tie (with the season split, if John Jay and CCNY tie for second, the tie breaker comes down to overall record against common non conference opponents). With one conference match remaining for each, John Jay can gain a tie for second if the Bloodhounds defeat York College on October 24 and CCNY loses to the College of Staten Island on October 14.

On Saturday, the visiting Beavers came out firing away on the Bloodhounds as CCNY maintained control for most of the first half. CCNY outshot John Jay 13-2 in the first half, and took seven corner kicks through the first forty-five minutes to none for the Bloodhounds.

But despite owning control for a majority of the first half, the score remained scoreless into the late stages of the first stanza. The Beavers finally broke through when CCNY's Tabitha Azor put one in the net with 1:56 remaining in the first half.

In the second half, the Bloodhounds came alive and started to take control of the contest. John Jay more than tripled its shot total in the second half, firing off nine. The Bloodhounds tied the score in the seventy-third minute on a header from inside the box by Bergelie Louis that came off a free kick from Alexis Ochoa.

The two schools played evenly the rest of the way to force the overtime. Newman's goal with less than three minutes gone by ended the game.

Marcelina Kopec made eight saves in the loss for John Jay.

CCNY held a 9-2 advantage on corner kicks in the game.

John Jay is back in action on Monday October 10 at Ramapo College at 4 p.m.
