Second Half Surge Not Quite Enough as Women’s Basketball Falls to Hunter

New York, N.Y.— The John Jay women's basketball team dug themselves a deep, deep hole they nearly came out of, but just a bit short, as a second half surge turned a would be blowout into a close game in the Bloodhounds 79-62 loss to Hunter College in front of a standing room only crowd at the Doghouse for homecoming.
 
With the loss, John Jay falls to 1-3 (0-1 CUNYAC) this season, while Hunter improves to 2-3 (1-0 CUNYAC).
 
The visiting Hawks took the John Jay crowd right out of the game early by taking complete control of the contest. Hunter limited the Bloodhounds to 19 first half points and cruised into halftime with a 42-19 lead. John Jay scored the first three points of the game to lead 3-0 before Hunter spurted off a 10-0 run to take a 10-3 lead en route to leading throughout the contest.
 
The Hawks lead increased throughout the first half and eventually led by as much as 25 in the first half when Hunter led 38-13 with 3:53 to go. Up 14-9 with eleven minutes to go in the first half, Hunter outscored John Jay 24-4 over the next seven plus minutes to earn their biggest lead of the half.
 
Hunter shot 56.3 percent (18-for-32) from the field in the first half to 30.0 percent (9-for-30) for the Bloodhounds, while the Hawks enjoyed a 28-11 advantage in rebounding through the first stanza.
 
In the second half, Hunter appeared on cruise control in the early stages maintaining a twenty plus point lead.
 
The Hawks still led by 22 and were up 51-29 with 14:21 to go before John Jay penetrated into the lead and garnered momentum as the rapidly growing standing room only crowd sprung to life.
 
The Bloodhounds rambled off a 22-7 run as John Jay was suddenly down by only seven at 58-51 with 8:18 to play.
 
John Jay was once again down seven at 60-53 with 7:38 to go.
 
But as the Bloodhounds tank started to come up empty, Hunter's refueled as the Hawks connected on four straight trips down the court and the Bloodhounds none as Hunter capitalized with an 8-0 run to make the score 68-53 with just over five minutes to play and ultimately put the game out of reach.
 
After their dismal first half shooting, the Bloodhounds shot the ball well in the second half, connecting on 52.9 percent (18-for-34).
 
Aneska Tejada scored all of her team-high 15 points in the second half and grabbed seven of her team-high nine rebounds over the final twenty minutes to lead the charge during John Jay's second half surge. Meanwhile Tyana Hale added 13 points in the contest for the Bloodhounds, Danielle Eagan had 11 points, including nine in the second half, while Elizabeth Newton had 10 points in the contest.
 
Hunter was led by Kristen Markoe with 23 points, eight rebounds and five assists, while Nicole Lenard had 22 points and nine rebounds.
 
Hunter held a 59-26 advantage in rebounding, including a 27-7 edge on the offensive end, en route to a 21-8 advantage on second chance points.
 
John Jay returns to action on Monday December 5 at New Jersey City University at 6 p.m.
