Randall's Island, N.Y.— The John Jay women's soccer team played valiantly for over 110 minutes and played the College of Staten Island to a scoreless tie in the 2011 City University of New York Athletic Conference  / Applebee's women's soccer championship at Icahn Stadium. But the Bloodhounds fell just a tad short as CSI won 4-3 on penalty kicks to defeat the Bloodhounds and deny John Jay the championship.

With the tie, John Jay is now 6-13-2 overall with one game remaining, a regular season contest against Yeshiva University on Tuesday at 8 p.m.

In Saturday's championship game, the Bloodhounds, behind an excellent coached game by second year skipper Kamal Haruna, the Bloodhounds avenged a pair of losses in the regular season to the Dolphins, including a 4-0 setback on September 17 and a 5-0 defeat on October 1.

The Dolphins, who were the top seed for the championship after finishing CUNYAC regular season 6-0, outshot the Bloodhounds 31-8 overall in the contest, including   9-5 in the first half, 16-1 in the second half and 6-2 in the overtime. But it was the Bloodhounds who had the closest opportunities to score on their chances.

In the first half, Bergelie Louis had a breakaway opportunity, but her shot from point blank range landed directly in the chest of CSI goalkeeper Samantha Wysokowski, who made five saves. Then  in the overtime session, defender Danielle Bassett blasted a free kick that banged off the cross bar in the waning moments.

Less than half of CSI's shots landed on goal as the Dolphins put 14 on net, all of which were saved by John Jay goalkeeper Marcelina Kopec who made 14 saves.

John Jay was led offensively by Brenda Pitts, who took three shots, while Louis had two.

The CSI offense was led by Demi Jean Martorano with eight shots, two of which were on goal.

The Dolphins took 14 corner kicks in the contest, to four for the Bloodhounds.
