Women's Basketball Falls to Nazareth College

Rochester, N.Y.— Playing in their first game in almost three weeks, the John Jay women's basketball team was defeated by Nazareth College, 69-51, in the opening round of the Nazareth College New Years Eve tournament.
 
With the loss, the Bloodhounds fall to 3-5 this season, while Nazareth improves to 5-3. The Bloodhounds will now play in the consolation game on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Susquehanna University who lost 50-47 to St. Mary's College in the tournament's other game. St. Mary's will play Nazareth for the championship.
 
In Friday's contest, the Bloodhounds were led by Danielle Eagan with 15 points, while Jamecia Forsythe had 14 points and seven rebounds. Elizabeth Newton grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds in the contest. Nazareth was led by Erica Shaw with 13 points off the bench as the Flyers held a 39-6 advantage in off the bench scoring.
 
Nazareth led most of the first half and had a 36-28 lead at halftime.
 
After closing the first half on a 5-0 run, the Flyers opened the second half scoring the first four points of the second half to complete the 9-0 spurt and Nazareth led 40-28 with 18:39 to go.
 
John Jay pulled to within seven points of the lead twice in the second half, most recently with six and a half minutes to play and the Bloodhounds were down 55-48.
 
But the Flyers answered with a 12-0 run to break the game open and put the contest out of reach. Nazareth led 67-48 with 3:13 remaining before coasting the rest of the way.
 
John Jay shot better than Nazareth, making 37.5 percent of their field goal attempts, while the Flyers shot 34.6 percent from the field. But Nazareth grabbed 20 offensive rebounds and had less than half as many turnovers as John Jay which led to the Flyers making 28 field goals (28-for-81) to 21 (21-for-56) for John Jay.
 
Nazareth outscored John Jay 18-4 on second chance points.
