New York, N.Y.— The John Jay women's basketball team, playing in front of a packed ARC Arena, were defeated on the road, losing to Baruch College, 89-51 on Thursday evening, at Baruch's annual Battle of Lexington.
With the loss, John Jay is now 10-13 (7-5 CUNYAC) with one more conference remaining, a home contest against Lehman College on Saturday.
The Bloodhounds were led by
Danielle Moses with 12 points off the bench, while
Jessica Lirio added 11 for John Jay.
Elizabeth Newton grabbed 11 rebounds and had seven points.
Baruch was led by Regina Washington with 26 points, while Folashade Akinde added 13 points and 13 rebounds.
The host Bearcats scored the first 13 points of the game en route to leading from start to finish.
Despite the early large deficit, the Bloodhounds hung around and stayed within striking range in the first half.
After falling behind 13-0, John Jay went on an 8-1 run to pull to within seven points of the lead. Later in the stanza, the Bloodhounds were within a half dozen after a
Dominique Grice jumper made the score 25-19 with 3:28 remaining.
The Bearcats eventually got the lead back to double figures as they went into halftime up 38-28.
Baruch opened the second half by scoring the first twenty-three points unanswered and took a 61-28 lead with 13:49 to go. John Jay got its first field goal almost six and a half minutes into the stanza on a bucket by
Jamecia Forsythe.
The Bearcats maintained a sizable lead the rest of the way. John Jay dented into the deficit in the latter stages of the second half with a 10-2 run that cut the margin to twenty-five points with just under six minutes remaining.
But Baruch pulled away again and closed out the game on a 9-0 run that gave them a thirty-eight point lead before the contest ended.
Baruch held a 32-8 advantage on points in the paint.
The Bearcats held a 60-48 edge in rebounding.
