West Harrison, N.Y.— The John Jay baseball team quickly saw its one game winning streak evaporate on Tuesday as the Bloodhounds fell to SUNY Purchase College 6-3 at Silver Lake Park.
The host Panthers, who served as the visiting team on the scoreboard as per pregame agreement since the game was originally scheduled for American Legion Field, scored a run in the top of the first en route to leading from start to finish.
The early stages of the game was a classic pitchers duel with neither team getting on the bases much. After SUNY Purchase took its 1-0 lead, the score remained that way into the top of the fifth. During that time span, starting pitchers,
Craig Lalla for John Jay and Chris Carboni were holding their own.
Butin the top of inning number five, the Panthers scored two runs off of Lalla with one swing of the bat as Kevin McQuade, who had three RBI on the afternoon, blasted a shot to centerfield for an inside the park homerun that was over the heads of the John Jay outfielders as the ball continued to roll to the fence which was well over 450 feet from home plate.
The Panthers scored one run in the sixth and another in the seventh to take a 5-0 lead after six and a half innings.
John Jay finally got a run across in the bottom of the seventh when
Wilmer Chavez scored from third on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Steven Caracena. The Bloodhounds had a chance to dent into the lead further, but left the bases loaded when the inning ended.
SUNY Purchase tacked on another run in the top of the eighth to go up 6-1, before the Bloodhounds got around to Carboni. The first four batters in the inning reached safely, including three singles and an error, which in the process knocked Carboni out of the game.
The scoring started when
Yahnny Arias led off the inning with a single and later scored from third on
Bobby Villante's at-bat. Then Chavez, who was 2-for-4, registered a single to rightfield that scored
Dennis Lopez. But the final two batters made out to end any eighth inning rally.
Chavez and Arias had two hits each for the Bloodhounds who had seven hits as a team.
SUNY Purchase, who remains undefeated at 5-0 this season, had a three hit game by Austin Groves who was 3-for-4.
Lalla suffered the loss after going 6 1/3 innings and allowed five runs on eight hits. Ronald Barliias went 2 2/3 and allowed one run on one hit and struck out four.
John Jay is back in action on Thursday for a game at Drew University at 3:30 p.m.
