Madison, N.J.— The John Jay baseball team was defeated by Drew University 10-3 at Doc Young Field on Thursday afternoon.
With the loss, John Jay falls to 1-9 overall as the Bloodhounds play their first conference games of the season on Friday morning against Yeshiva University.
The the loss at Drew,
Wilmer Chavez and Cory Harper had a pair of hits each in the contest, while Harper scored twice.
The host Rangers, who batted in the top half of the innings, scored a run in the top of the second and two in the third to take a 3-0 advantage. The Rangers took that lead into the bottom of the fifth inning when the Bloodhounds got two across to pull to within a run.
An RBI single by
Dennis Lopez knocked in
Yahnny Arias. Then moments later, Harper scored his first of two runs on an RBI single by
Steven Caracena.
But Drew got back the two runs by putting up a pair of their own in the top of the sixth to go up 5-2. Then the Rangers scored four more times in the top of the seventh to make the score 9-2.
John Jay got one run back in the bottom of the seventh on a fielder's choice grounder by
Benjamin Beiro that scored Harper from third.
But the Bloodhounds would get no closer. Drew scored one more run in the top of the ninth to round out the scoring.
Chavez suffered the loss for John Jay. He went six full innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits and struck out one.
Drew University improved to 5-5 overall this season.
