Brooklyn, N.Y.— The John Jay baseball team lost a pair of games in what was the Bloodhounds home and conference opener on Friday as John Jay lost to Yeshiva University 6-5 in the first game and 6-4 in the nightcap at American Legion Field.
With the losses, John Jay is now 1-11 overall (2-0 CUNYAC) this season, while Yeshiva is 3-4 (3-4 CUNYAC).
In the first game, the Bloodhounds were led by
Dennis Lopez and
Yahnny Arias with three hits each, while
Wilmer Chavez was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI
The Bloodhounds had the lead for much of the contest. They broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI single by Chavez that scored Arias. John Jay then increased its lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Meanwhile, starting pitcher,
Steven Caracena was cruising along. He shut down the Macabees for the first five innings and fanned 11 batters over seven innings.
Yeshiva punched three runs across in the top of the sixth to make the score 3-3. A bases clearing double by Gabriel Feld, who was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, capped the inning and helped pull Yeshiva even.
The Bloodhounds got two runs back in the bottom of the sixth to retake the lead. An RBI single by Frederick Rivera scored
Cosme Munoz, then moments later a single by Lopez brought Rivera home.
But Yeshiva capitalized with three more runs in the seventh to take the lead and eventually win the contest. The big blow came off the bat of catcher Jeremy Schwartz who blasted a two run homer to tie it. Schwartz's home run highlighted a big day at the plate for him in game one. He was 3-for-4 with two runs, two RBI and was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.
The Macabees completed the comeback once the bases were empty. Feld laced another single and went to second on an error by the John Jay outfield. He then came in to score when attempting to steal third, the throw by the catcher was wild allowing Feld to score.
Then Feld pitched a scoreless seventh to pick up the save, while Zachary Weiner picked up the win after getting just one out in relief in the bottom of the sixth.
Caracena suffered the loss after allowing six runs (two earned) over seven innings.
John Jay committed five errors in game one.
In game two, John Jay scored a run in the first, two in the second and one in the third to take a 4-1 lead. Yeshiva's lone run during the first three innings came in the top of the third as John Jay led 4-1 after three.
John Paul Zinser, Munoz and Rivera had two hits apiece in the second game. Rivera drove in the first run of the game on an RBI single that scored Lopez. Then in the second inning Caracena connected on a two-run homer to put the Bloodhounds up 3-0.
John Jay maintained a 4-2 lead after five innings before the Macabees platted four runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead. Yeshiva's big hit in the four run sixth came off the bat of Joel Feigenbaum with a bases clearing double that scored three runs. Feigenbaum was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles in game two.
For John Jay,
Braylin Perez suffered the loss after going 5.0 innings and allowing five runs on nine hits and fanned eight batters.
Weiner picked up the win for Yeshiva after going 5.2 innings and allowed four runs (two earned). Feld earned his second save of the day pitching the final four outs. He allowed no hits and struck out one.
