Bronx, N.Y.— The John Jay baseball team split a pair of games on Sunday afternoon as the Bloodhounds split a doubleheader with Baruch College. The Bloodhounds won the first game 8-6, before the Bearcats took the second contest 9-2 at Bronx Community College baseball field.
With the split, John Jay is now 2-12 overall and 1-3 in City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play, while Baruch is now 5-10 (2-1 CUNYAC).
In the first game, the Bloodhounds had six hits, including two each by Ryan Corrigan and
Corry Harper. But the big blow by the Bloodhounds came off the bat of right fielder
Steven Caracena with a grand slam home run in the bottom of the first to set the pace.
The shot by Caracena gave the Bloodhounds a 4-0 lead after one and the Bloodhounds never trailed in the game.
Baruch, whose all six runs in the game were unearned as a results of six errors by the Bloodhounds, got three runs in the top of the second to cut the lead to one.
John Jay got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the third to take a 6-3 lead.
But Baruch capitalized on more John Jay fielding woes and got a run in the fourth and two in the fifth to tie the game.
The Bloodhounds retook the lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. John Jay took the lead when
John Paul Zinser was hit by the pitch with the bases loaded to score Harper, who led the inning off with a single. John Jay tacked on another run as
Wilmer Chavez scored on a Baruch error with two outs.
Craig Lalla earned his first win of the season after pitching 1 2/3 innings of relief.
Braylin Perez struck out six over 5 1/3 in a no decision.
John Yuksekol was 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI for Baruch.
In the second game, Baruch jumped out to a 9-0 lead to salvage a split. Bearcats' John Daly was 4-for-4 and was a triple shy of the cycle. He belted a grand slam homer in the second and had a double and two singles. He tallied six of Baruch's nine RBI.
The Bloodhounds were limited to four hits in game two including one each from
Yahnny Arias, Frederick Rivera, Corrigan and Chavez.
Jonathan Ovalles also went yard with a two-run shot in the fourth inning for Baruch.
John Jay is back in action on Tue. Mar. 29 against New Jersey City University at 3:30 p.m.
