Brooklyn, N.Y.— The final score paired with the chilling temperature might have one think there was a football game at American Legion Field between John Jay and New Jersey City University. But it was in fact a baseball game in which 47 runs were scored and 40 hits were compiled as the Bloodhounds lost to the Gothic Knights 26-21 on Tuesday afternoon.

With the loss, John Jay's record is now 2-13, while New Jersey City University (NJCU) improves to 3-11 overall this season.

Wilmer Chavez led the way for John Jay with seven runs batted in. He was 2-for-6 and scored twice. Meanwhile Ryan Corrigan had a game-high four hits as he went 4-for-6 with a run and two RBI.

Each member of the Bloodhounds starting lineup also crossed home at least once and were led by Corry Harper who was 2-for-4, scored four times and had three RBI. Fellow teammates Yahnny Arias, Benjamin Beiro and Bobby Villante scored three times each in the game.

NJCU was led by Rob Gonzalez, Michael Fiorentino, Francisco Ramirez and Brian Bustillo with three hits each. Gonzalez added four RBI in the contest, so to did Jordan Tetrick who registered one hit, a three run homer in the fourth.

All eighteen players who had a plate appearance had at least one hit and scored once.

In the super high scoring affair, it was all John Jay through the first three innings. The Bloodhounds, with four runs in the first inning, another in the second and seven in the third, established a 12-0 lead after three frames. All nine members of the Bloodhounds batting order had at least one hit each after three innings

But the scoring, and the game, was far from over. The visiting Gothic Knights capitalized on errant John Jay fielding and scored seven unearned runs in the top of the fourth inning to make the score 12-7. The inning was highlighted by Tetrick's home run as NJCU stayed within striking range of the lead.

John Jay scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to double up NJCU 14-7.

But NJCU pounded and pounded away and kept the score close. And with John Jay leading 15-12 going into the eighth inning, the Gothic Knights took the lead with a six run eighth to go up 18-15. The big blow came as Tetrick reached on a three base error that scored two runs.

In what was already a high scoring affair through seven innings, NJCU outscored John Jay 14-6 in the eighth and ninth innings to claim the win.

After an eight run ninth inning, the Gothic Knights led 26-17. But the game was far from over. The first three John Jay batters reached safely as the Bloodhounds had the bases loaded, nobody out and the top of the order coming to the plate.

A sacrifice fly by Harper scored Corrigan, who led off the inning with a base hit. Then after Villante walked to reload the bases, Dennis Lopez ripped a single to score William Moran. Chavez then picked up his seventh RBI of the game after reaching on an error that scored Arias from third. Then after a sacrifice fly by Cosme Munoz, the Bloodhounds could cause no further damage as the game finally ended.

The game had 123 plate appearances, nine errors, 22 walks, 16 unearned runs, 10 wild pitches and five hit batsmen.

Arias suffered the loss in relief for John Jay. Alvin Carrasco earned the win for the Gothic Knights.

John Jay returns to action on Wednesday at Stevens Institute of Technology.
