Brooklyn, N.Y.— The John Jay baseball team dug itself a gigantic hole early in the contest and almost pulled out of it in the later innings as the Bloodhounds outscored its opponent 8-0 over the final four innings but lost in the end against the College of Mount Saint Mary (CMSM) 13-10 at American Legion Field on Thursday.
The Bloodhounds were led by
Wilmer Chavez who was 4-for-5 with a double, three runs and an RBI, while
Corry Harper,
Yahnny Arias,
Dennis Lopez, William Moran and
Cosme Munoz had two hits each. Munoz and
Bobby Villante added two RBI apiece in the contest.
CMSM were led by Joe Clarke, Max Tecce, Louis Peisel, Paul Cherubino and Thomas McNoble with two hits each.
Despite the large early deficit, the Bloodhounds took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Harper led off the frame with a double and later scored on an RBI groundout by Lopez. Then Chavez ripped a single that scored Arias to put the Bloodhounds up a pair.
John Jay took the 2-0 lead into the third inning when the visiting Blue Knights took the lead for good with a trio of scores. The first run came across via one of the Bloodhounds' six errors on the afternoon. CMSM got on the board on a basehit by Clarke, but an error by the John Jay outfield allowed McNoble the lead runner to score on the play. Then another John Jay miscue allowed a pair of unearned runs to score before the inning ended.
The Blue Knights then scored seven runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to lead 13-2 after four and a half innings.
The Bloodhounds, behind relief pitching by Arias, Harper and
Alex Rodriguez over the final four innings held the Blue Knights in check. The latter pitching held CMSM to no runs on just one hit over those final four frames.
Meanwhile, John Jay battled and battled to the bitter end. The Bloodhounds got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the sixth to edge closer. An RBI groundout by Villante scored Lopez. Then the Bloodhounds capitalized on a gift by the Blue Knights outfield as Chavez scored when Ryan Corrigan reached on an error.
Then the Bloodhounds scored three runs in the eighth and another three in the ninth making CMSM sweat. In the eighth inning, three separate RBI singles scored three runs to make the score 13-7 heading into the ninth inning.
After the Blue Knights went quietly in the ninth, the Bloodhounds threatened immediately. The first four batters reached base safely and a run scored to make the score 13-8 and the bases loaded.
But John Jay's other two runs were scored on outs including a fielder's choice and sacrifice fly respectively before another fielder's choice ended the contest.
The Bloodhounds outhit the Blue Knights 16-12. John Jay scored nine earned runs to eight for CMSM.
Ronald Barillas suffered the loss. He allowed nine runs (five earned) on eight hits.
Carl Henchey picked up the win for CMSM.
