Brooklyn, N.Y.— The John Jay baseball team was swept in a doubleheader on Saturday as the Bloodhounds lost to St. Joseph's-Brooklyn 8-1 and 15-7 at American Legion Field.
With the losses, John Jay is now 7-21 overall. St. Joseph's-Brooklyn improves to 5-16 on the season.
In game one, the Bloodhounds had a pair of hits each from
Yahnny Arias and
Bobby Villante. John Jay's lone run came in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by
Wilmer Chavez that scored
Corry Harper who led off the inning by getting hit by the pitch.
The first four Bloodhounds reached base in the top of the first before leaving the bases loaded.
Starting pitcher
Mark Marte, in his first NCAA career start, did not allow a hit until the sixth inning. But he was behind in the contest as the visiting Bears had three runs on no hits through the first five innings.
St. Joseph's-Brooklyn got a run in the third inning to tie the score. Joe Swierczewski led off the frame by being hit by a pitch. He moved to second when the next batter took one for the team as well. Then a couple of ground outs later he scored from third.
Two more runs came the Bears way in the fourth without a hit. St. Joseph's Brooklyn capitalized on a pair of John Jay errors that inning and a pair of walks helped get runners on base before being moved along the base path by errors.
Swiercewski laced a wind assisted triple into the leftfield corner to score a pair of runs before he scored himself on a bunt attempt by Chris Pacifico.
Donny Pagano earned the game one win for the Bears after going the distance and allowing a run on seven hits with six strikeouts.
In game two, John Jay took a 3-1 lead after three innings. In the first inning Ryan Corrigan, who had three RBI in the nightcap, lifted a sacrifice fly to score Arias, his first of three runs in the second game. The run tied the game after the Bears scored in the top of the first to start the game.
In the third inning, an RBI groundout by Lopez scored Harper. Then a sacrifice fly by Corrigan scored Arias.
But the Bears outscored John Jay 14-0 over a three inning span as St. Joseph's-Brooklyn led 15-4 after five and a half innings.
The Bloodhounds scored four times in the bottom of the sixth to narrow the gap. But the excessive weather conditions stopped the game after that .
Chavez suffered the game two loss after going 5.0 innings and allowing nine runs (four earned) on 10 hits. He struck out nine batters.
Kevin Diaz went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI for the Bears. Mykelle Cortez was the winning pitcher in game two.
The Bloodhounds return to action on Sunday for another doubleheader at Legion Field starting at 2 p.m.
