Bronx, N.Y.— The John Jay baseball team earned a pair of huge wins on Saturday afternoon against conference foe Lehman College as the Bloodhounds swept a doubleheader from the Lightning, winning by scores of 7-5 in eight innings in game one before striking the Lightning 16-4 in the second game.
With the wins, the Bloodhounds improved to 4-16 overall this season, including 3-3 in City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play, while Lehman is now 4-12 (2-4 CUNYAC) this season.
The Bloodhounds won the first contest in come from behind fashion. In what started out as a pitcher's duel, with Lehman leading 1-0 after five innings, the Bloodhounds plated five runs in the top of the sixth to take a 5-1 lead.
The game one sixth inning rally happened with two outs.
Wilmer Chavez, who was 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI in the opener, ripped a bases clearing double that scored
Dennis Lopez and
Yahnny Arias to give the Bloodhounds a 3-1 lead. One batter earlier, John Jay tied the score on an RBI single by Lopez that scored
Bobby Villante.
John Jay proceeded to score what proved to be needed insurance runs as the next batter, Ryan Corrigan blasted a two-run homer to put the Bloodhounds up 5-1.
But Lehman bounced right back and scored four runs of their own in the bottom half to tie the game. The big hit came via a two-run homer by Raul Cordero who was 2-for-4 with a double and home run.
After a scoreless seventh inning, the Bloodhounds got the runs they needed in the eighth to pick up the victory. The game winning hit was delivered by Chavez with a two-out single that scored
Corry Harper who led off the inning with a walk. Corrigan then doubled in Chavez to give the Bloodhounds a two run lead.
Lehman's only base runner in the bottom of the eighth was caught stealing second as starting pitcher
Braylin Perez earned the win. He went eight innings and allowed five runs on nine hits and fanned five.
In game two, the Bloodhounds took a 7-0 lead into the through three and a half innings en route to their most lopsided win of the season so far.
After Lehman got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, the Bloodhounds attacked for six in the top of the fifth for a 13-1 lead en route completing the sweep.
Chavez completed a big afternoon by going 4-for-5 with two runs and five RBI in game two, while
Benjamin Beiro and Arias had two hits and two RBI each. Arias and Lopez scored three times in the nightcap for John Jay.
Craig Lalla earned the win after going seven innings and allowing four runs on nine hits and two strikeouts.
Lehman was led by Christian Fadul who was 3-for-4 with a double, a run and two RBI.
The two will meet again on Sunday for a non conference game at American Legion Field at noon.
