New York, N.Y.— The John Jay softball team lost a pair of conference games on Tuesday afternoon to Hunter College. The Bloodhounds lost 8-1 in game one and 10-0 in game two on a rare beautiful sunny afternoon this season at DeWitt Clinton Field.
With the losses, the Bloodhounds end their 2011 City University of New York Athletic Conference regular season with a 6-8 record and a fifth place finish. John Jay will play at Brooklyn College on Wednesday May 4 in the conference championship play-in game.
On Tuesday, in the first game, the Bloodhounds were limited to one hit through the first six innings. But John Jay's lone hit was a solo homerun in the bottom of the first by
Krystal Class. The homerun gave the Bloodhounds a 1-0 lead at that moment.
John Jay led 1-0 into the third inning when the Hawks tied the score Megan Meehan walked to start the top of the third, and scored from third on a wild pitch to even the game.
Hunter then scored three in the top of the fourth to take a 4-1 lead, then plated another four in the top of the seventh to go up 8-1 and win by that amount.
John Jay had two hits in the contest. The Bloodhounds other hit was a two out triple down the leftfield line by
Leidy Lopera.
Hunter had eight hits in the game and got two off the bat of Arielle Zieff who was 2-for-4 with a triple, a run and an RBI. Fellow teammates Sophia Ponce and Julia Lipovac had two RBI each. Ponce had a two-run homer in the seventh for the Hawks.
Hawks starting pitcher Angel Iacovetti went the distance and allowed one run on two hits and struck out 15.
In game two, the teams took a scoreless tie into the third inning. Hunter broke the game open with four runs in the top of the third, then three more in the fourth and another three in the fifth to win 10-0.
John Jay had two hits in the nightcap, including one each from Class and
Kaitlyn Walsh.
Hunter landed 12 hits in game two, including three from McKenna who was 3-for-4 with a double, a run and two RBIs. Leadoff batter Crissette Maxwell was 2-for-4 with a three run homer and three runs scored.
John Jay returns to action on Wednesday for a doubleheader at SUNY Purchase at 3 p.m.
