Brooklyn, N.Y.--The John Jay baseball team was eliminated from the 2011 MCU / CUNYAC baseball championship at MCU Park on Saturday afternoon. The Bloodhounds lost 6-2 to the College of Staten Island in the first game, before losing in the elimination game to Baruch College 6-1.
In the first game (the winner's bracket game), the top seeded College of Staten Island got a pair of runs across to take a 2-0 lead. Both runs in the frame were unearned as John Jay, who committed four errors in the game, made two in that inning ultimately resulting in two Dolphins crossing home.
John Jay edged closer in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Corrigan that scored
Dennis Lopez who led off the inning with a walk.
But the Dolphins remained on top and countered with another run in the bottom of the fourth which was once again unearned as another John Jay fielding miscue plated another College of Staten Island run.
The Bloodhounds' only other run came in the top of the sixth when Lopez scored for the second time in the contest. After leading off with a single, he came around to score on an RBI single by
Wilmer Chavez to make the score 3-2 at that moment.
However, the College of Staten Island built a cushion with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth, their only two earned scores of the game against starting pitcher
Mark Marte. Dan Lynch, who was 2-for-2 with a run and a pair of RBIs, registered a single to score James Lewis. Then Bryan Moreno reached on a fielder's choice to bring home Ray Gise to make the score 5-2 after six innings.
The Dolphins rounded out the scoring with another run in the bottom of the eighth with another unearned score, their fourth of the game to push ahead 6-2.
John Jay had five hits in the game including one each by Lopez, Chavez,
Steven Kendrick, William Moran and
Cosme Munoz.
Marte pitched eight full innings and allowed six runs (two eanred) on seven hits and struck out two.
In the second elimination against Baruch, the second seeded Bearcats averted its 12 inning loss from the previous day.
John Jay took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on an RBI single by Kendrick that scored
Yahnny Arias who led off with a single and was 2-for-5 with a run in the game.
The Bearcats tied the score in the bottom of the third on a RBI single by Thomas Daly that drove in Richard Melendez. Baruch had 10 hits in the contest with six of then coming off the bats of Daly and Melendez who had three each.
Baruch took the lead for good with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth before adding three more in the seventh to establish a five run cushion late.
Chavez suffered the loss for John Jay after going seven innings and allowing six runs on eight hits with five strikeouts.
