Throggs Neck, N.Y.— John Jay pitchers Braylin Perez, Craig Lalla and Mark Marte combined to allowed just one run on one hit through eight innings and Wilmer Chavez helped preserve the lead in the ninth as the Bloodhounds improved to 6-16 on the year with a 6-3 win over SUNY Maritime on Wednesday afternoon.

The win by the Bloodhounds, who played as the home team in the contest, gives John Jay four wins in its last five contests, while the Privateers fell to 11-9 on the season.

John Jay pitching did not allow a SUNY Maritime hit until the top of the sixth inning when a seeing eye single by Ed Martinez led off the frame. Perez pitched the first three innings and allowed one walk while facing the minimum, before giving way to Lalla who allowed a run, two walks and hit a batter in his one inning of work. Marte made his NCAA debut and made it memorable. He tossed four innings and allowed one hit while striking out three.

Meanwhile, John Jay was led by Chavez and Ryan Corrigan with three hits each. Chavez was 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI, while Corrigan was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles. Yahnny Arias and Bobby Villante had two hits each. The Bloodhounds recorded 14 hits in the contest.

Equally as impressive of the hitting and pitching was the fielding. The Bloodhounds did not make an error for just the third time this season. They were 10-for-10 on groundball attempts, 6-for-6 on fly ball attempts and turned a pair of double plays.

SUNY Maritime scattered four hits, three of which came in the ninth. Christopher Myers led the Privateers with a pair of RBI.

Marte earned the win for the Bloodhounds. He is now 1-0 on the season.

John Jay is back in action on Saturday April 9 for a home doubleheader against the College of Staten Island for a doubleheader that starts at 12 p.m.
