Game 2
Brooklyn, N.Y.— In what could possibly be a preview of the 2011 MCU / City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) baseball championship, the John Jay and College of Staten Island baseball teams split a conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon as the Bloodhounds won the first game 5-1 before CSI took the nightcap 3-0 at American Legion Field.
The two pitcher's duel contests lasted a combined three hours and one minute. The first game went one hour and forty-two minutes, while game two lasted all but 81 minutes.
In the first game, John Jay got a splendid performance by freshman right handed pitcher
Braylin Perez who went the distance and allowed one run on seven hits and struck out three.
The Bloodhounds broke a scoreless tie in the third inning on a two out – two run single by Ryan Corrigan that scored
Wilmer Chavez and
Benjamin Beiro. The pair of runs proved to be more than enough, but John Jay added three insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth to lead 5-0 at the time.
Chavez earned his team leading 30th run batted in of the season with a single that scored
Corry Harper. Moments later Corrigan earned his third RBI of the game by taking one for the team with the bases loaded that scored
Dennis Lopez from third.
The hit batsman by Corrigan was the second to as many batters by Dolphin starting pitcher James Mardikos who was lifted for relief pitcher Mike Van Pelt.
Van Pelt entered the game with the bases loaded and nobody out and retired the first two batters with no further damage. But with two outs he walked designated hitter William Moran to force home another run as Beiro trotted home from third.
The Dolphins lone run of game one came in the top of the sixth when Joe Cassano lifted a sacrifice fly that scored Henry Roman. But Perez worked out of the inning letting CSI cause no further damage en route to earning his team leading third win of the season.
In the second game, CSI quickly scored two runs to go up 2-0. Reigning conference Player of the Year, Pat Gale laced a double to right-center to score Bryan Moreno who led off the game with a walk. Then later in the frame, a bases loaded walk by Sal Todaro scored Gale from third.
The two first inning runs proved to be more than enough for the Dolphins to salvage the split. Game two starting pitcher Nick Tingos went the distance en route to tossing a three hit shutout while walking none and striking out three.
The only other run in the game came in the fifth inning as Todaro ripped a two out double to left that scored Cassano who drew a two out walk to get on base.
John Jay's three hits were all singles including one each by Lopez, Chavez and
Cosme Munoz. No runner for the Bloodhounds made it to second base in the lightning fast contest.
Craig Lalla suffered the loss for John Jay after going the full seven innings and allowing three runs on seven hits with two strikeouts.
The two teams will square off once again on Sunday at the College of Staten Island for a non conference affair starting at 12 p.m.
