Maspeth, N.Y.— The John Jay women's soccer team picked up a season opening win on Thursday afternoon with a 2-0 victory over the College of Mount Saint Vincent (CMSV) at the Metropolitan Oval.
After a scoreless first half, the Bloodhounds netted a pair in the second half for the two goal triumph. John Jay got its first score of the 2011 season at the 76:09 mark on a goal by
Bergelie Louis. The ball came rolling toward the CMSV net, but Dolphins' goalkeeper Kara McNish got enough body on it to deflect it. But then a mad scramble in front of the net ensued with several players from each team involved before Louis knocked it home.
The Bloodhounds scored again just under eleven minutes later when team captain
Brenda Pitts put her foot on a loose ball and lifted it over the outstretched arm of the Dolphins keeper to give John Jay the insurance.
The game was a relatively even matched contest throughout. John Jay outshot CMSV 13-12 overall, including 9-5 in the second half.
Pitts, Louis and
Alexis Ochoa took three shots each, while
Danielle Bassett shot a pair.
Marcelina Kopec picked up the shutout by making seven saves in the season opening win.
John Jay is back in action on Saturday for a match against FDU Florham at the Metropolitan Oval at 12 p.m.
