Women's Soccer Starts Conference Season with Win over CCNY

Randall's Island, N.Y.— Alexis Ochoa netted a goal in the twentieth minute of the first half, and it proved to be enough as goalkeeper Marcelina Kopec made seven saves en route to her second shutout of the season as the John Jay women's soccer team opened its 2011 conference schedule with a 1-0 win over the City College of New York on Saturday.


With the win, John Jay evens its record a 2-2-0 (1-0-0) on the season. CCNY is now 1-2-0 (0-1-0).


Ochoa's goal came at the 19:41 mark off a pass from Lina Gonzalez.


The Bloodhounds were outshot in the contest for the third time in as many games. The Beavers took 23 attacks toward the net, while John Jay sent off nine. CCNY outshot the Bloodhounds 14-5 in the first half and 9-4 over the final forty-five minutes of soccer.


Bergelie Louis took five shots in the contest, four of which landed on goal, while Stephannie Rengifo attempted a pair with one landing on goal. CCNY goalkeeper Nicole Carroll made five saves for the Beavers.


CCNY players Dzindzi A-Wade and Yanique Newman took seven shots each in the game.


John Jay took the only two corner kicks in the game.


The Bloodhounds are now 4-0-1 all-time against the Beavers.


John Jay returns to action on Wednesday September 14 for a home contest against SUNY Maritime, 6 p.m. at the Metropolitan Oval.
