Stephannie Rengifo scored her first NCAA goal by lifting a shot over the SUNY Maritime goalkeeper in the final minute of play to break a 2-2 tie and propel the Bloodhounds to victory as the John Jay women's soccer team defeated SUNY Maritime 4-2 at the Metropolitan Oval on Wednesday evening.
The win puts John Jay back over .500 for the season as the Bloodhounds improved to 3-2-0 overall. SUNY Maritime is now 1-4-1.
The visiting Privateers had scored just moments before and the game looked destined to go into overtime. But the Bloodhounds got the break they needed when Rengifo got her foot on the ball on the near sideline and put it in the air over the outstretched reach of Privateer goalkeeper Courtney Marietta.
The goal came less than two minutes after SUNY Maritime tied the score. With John Jay leading 2-1, Privateer, Jorrie Trenhamp, blasted a no doubter from point blank range in front of the Bloodhound net.
But with just moments to go, Rengifo's goal erased any would be momentum for SUNY Maritime. Then later in the final minute, John Jay put the game out of reach as
Lina Gonzalez scored to seal the deal.
In what was a very evenly played contest, John Jay held a slight 12-8 advantage in shots and 8-6 in shots on goal.
The Bloodhounds scored the first goal of the game to take a 1-0 lead when
Alexis Ochoa netted one at 37:36 of the first half. But with exactly six minutes remaining, the Privateers tied the score on a goal by Kadie Hook.
After going into half time tied at 1-1, John Jay retook the lead at 68:38 on a goal by
Bergelie Louis. But SUNY Maritime tied the score in the waning moments of the contest on Trenhamp's blast before Rengifo got the game winner for the Bloodhounds.
SUNY Maritime held a 3-0 advantage on corner kicks attempted.
Marcelina Kopec made four saves for the Bloodhounds.
John Jay returns to action on Saturday for a conference showdown against the College of Staten Island at 12 p.m at the Metropolitan Oval.
