Women’s Basketball Plays Hard but Falls to Baruch

New York, N.Y.—The John Jay women's basketball team fought hard with the defending conference champions, but ran out of gas in the end as the Bloodhounds were defeated by Baruch College 88-62 at the Doghouse on Wednesday evening.
 
 
John Jay (3-7, 0-2 CUNYAC) took the contest right to Baruch (6-5, 2-0 CUNYAC) from the opening tap. John Jay had the lead for the majority of the first half. Baruch's only lead through the first sixteen plus minutes was a 6-4 edge with 2:17 gone by.
 
Then up 15-14, John Jay went on an 11-2 run to go up double-digits as the Bloodhounds were ahead 26-16 with 9:35 to play.
 
But Baruch answered back by outscoring John Jay 24-5 over the next eight and a half minutes and take a 40-31 lead with just over a minute to go.
 
John Jay fought tough and closed out the final minute of play on a 5-0 spurt to keep the game close as the Bloodhounds went into halftime down 40-36.
 
The strength and depth of Baruch kept the Bloodhounds at bay in the early stages in the second half before the Bearcats pulled away late.
 
Baruch opened the final stanza with an 8-2 run to go up by 10.
 
The Bloodhounds were still within a workable distance of the lead and were down 68-57 with 6:45 to play.
 
But the Bearcats closed out the contest with a 20-5 spurt, including a 10-0 run to finish it off.
 
John Jay was led by Tyana Hale with 22 points on 7-for-15 shooting. Jamecia Forsythe added a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds.
 
Jessica Duleba had a team-high 16 points for Baruch, followed by Francess Henry with 15.
 
Baruch outscored John Jay 40-24 in the paint and held a 53-37 rebounding edge. The Bearcats bench outscored the Bloodhounds 34-9.
 
John Jay's next game is Friday January 6, home against Lehman College at 5 p.m.
