New York, N.Y.— The John Jay women's basketball team was defeated at home, losing to the City College of New York (CCNY) 65-42 at the Doghouse on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Bloodhounds fall to 6-14 (3-7 CUNYAC), while CCNY improves to 4-18 (2-7 CUNYAC).
John Jay was led by
Elizabeth Newton with 14 points , while
Jamecia Forsythe added 10 points and eight boards.
CCNY had four players score in double figures and were led by Kendra Rivers with 13 points and five assists. Sajidah Pressley had 12 points and five assists for the Beavers.
The game was tight in the beginning, before CCNY used an 18-4 run to turn a 12-11 John Jay lead into a 29- 16 lead with 6:32 remaining.
The Beavers maintained a sizable lead and went into halftime up 35-24.
CCNY then gradually pulled away in the second half, outscoring the Bloodhounds 30-18 over the final twenty minutes for the victory.
John Jay committed 21 turnovers, while the Beavers committed 18. But CCNY capitalized on their takeaways, outscoring John Jay 24-10 in points off turnovers.
CCNY shot 42.4 percent from the field (26-for-61), while John Jay connected on 31.5 percent (17-for-54).
John Jay returns to action on Monday, February 6 at St. Joseph's-Long Island at 7 p.m.
