Hoboken, N.J.— John Jay baseball lost a pair of games on Saturday afternoon as the Bloodhounds were swept in a doubleheader by Stevens Institute of Technology (Stevens Tech), losing the first game 7-3 and the second game 9-3.
The two losses puts the Bloodhounds at 2-10 overall this season. Stevens Tech is now 6-2 overall.
In the first game,
Steven Caracena and
Brian McKenna had a pair of hits each. Caracena went 2-for-3 with a double and a run batted in, while McKenna was 2-for-4 with a run and a run batted in. Fellow teammates
Pedro Acosta,
Nestor Amarante and
Owen Kimmel had a hit each in game one.
The host Ducks took a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first before the Bloodhounds tied the score with a run in the top of the second. Amarante ripped a single down the right field line with two outs to score McKenna who led off the inning with a single to right-centerfield.
The Duck though scored three runs off Bloodhounds' starting pitcher,
Braylin Perez, in the bottom of the second to take the lead for good.
John Jay's two other runs in game one came in the top of the third. Caracena hit a one out double to the left-centerfield gap to score
Nick Hoyte, who led off the inning with a walk. Then McKenna reached on an infield hit to score
Cosme Munoz who walked as well in the inning.
The Ducks tacked on three insurance runs to cushion the lead, including one in the fourth and two in the fifth.
Stevens Tech had nine hits in game one and got two each from T.J. Alcorn, Tyler Courter and Brian Hennelly. Dan Allen had a pair of runs batted in in game one.
Perez suffered the game one loss pitching. He went six full innings and allowed seven runs (five earned) on nine hits and struck out two.
In the second game, the Bloodhounds scored a run in the top of the second and another in the third to take a 2-0 lead after two and a half innings.
The Bloodhounds went up 1-0 on an RBI groundout by Amarante that scored McKenna, who led off the inning by reaching on a Stevens Tech error. Game two saw eight errors, including three by John Jay and five by the Ducks.
John Jay took a two run lead in the top of the third on a double to right-centerfield by Caracena that scored
Yahnny Arias who walked and scored and was 0-for-3.
The Ducks though sent nine batters to the plate and scored four times in the bottom of the third off starting pitcher Kimmel, to take a 4-2 lead. Later in the game, the Ducks scored again to take a 5-2 lead after the fourth inning.
The Bloodhounds got another run across in the top of the fifth to edge closer.
Ronald Barillas reached on an error to lead off the fifth, then scored from third when Caracena reached on another Stevens Tech error with two outs to make the score 5-3.
Stevens Tech sent nine to the plate again in the bottom of the sixth for four more runs to establish a comfortable lead en route to the sweep.
Dan Allen had three runs batted in in the contest, while Hennelly, Donovan and Matt Glassman had two hits each for the Ducks.
