Pomona, N.Y.— The John Jay baseball team was defeated in a pair of non conference games as the Bloodhounds were defeated by SUNY Purchase in both games of a doubleheader, losing the first game 9-4 and the second game 5-1 at Provident Bank Park.

The loss drops the Bloodhounds record to 2-12 overall this season, while Purchase is now 6-6 on the year.

In game one, the Bloodhounds got a 3-for-3 performance from leadoff hitter Yahnny Arias who had two singles, a triple and scored twice. Meanwhile teammates, Steven Caracena, Brian McKenna, Joel Cabrera and Billy Moran had one hit each.

After, the host Panthers, who served as the visiting team batting in the top half in both games, left the bases loaded in the top of the first, the Bloodhounds quickly struck with a run in the bottom half to take a 1-0 lead. Arias led the bottom half of the first with a triple to left-centerfield, then scored on an RBI groundout by Caracena.

But the Panthers scored two in the second and three in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead in the fourth inning. Two of the three runs in the fourth were unearned as John Jay miscues by the John Jay infield led to Purchase to score extra runs.

“While we have not pitched great, our pitching is not as bad as it may seem,” said John Jay head coach, Dan Palumbo. “We have done a very poor job fielding and have given the other teams extra chances to score on us because of it. If we are going to turn this season around, we must do a much better job defensively.”

John Jay battled back in the bottom of the sixth and pulled to within a run. An infield hit by Caracena drove in Arias for the second time in the contest. Later in the inning, Cabrera doubled to bring home McKenna, who singled in the previous at-bat. Then, the Bloodhounds capitalized themselves on poor fielding by the opposition as Cabrera scored an unearned run when Eddie Montanez reached on an error. The next batter, Moran, laced a single to right to get the tying run to second before the rally came to a hault.

In the top of the seventh, Purchase returned the favor with interest and platted four runs to go up 9-4.

John Jay failed to get a run across in the bottom half as the game ended.

Mark Marte suffered the game one loss after going 6.1 innings and allowing nine runs (seven earned) on 10 hits. He struck out three batters.

Purchase was led in game one by leadoff hitter, Michael Sarni who was 2-for-4 with two runs and two runs batted in.

Panthers' starting pitcher  Matt Paz went the distance and allowed four runs (three earned)on seven hits and struck out two en route to the game one win.

In the second game, Purchase scored five runs in the first two innings to take a 5-1 lead, which turned out to be the final score.

The Bloodhounds' lone run was in the bottom of the first when Arias scored on an RBI single by Caracena. John Jay had a chance to do further damage, but with two on and one out, the Panthers turned a key taylor made double-play to end the threat.

“We have had very untimely hitting, our situational hitting has been bad,” said Palumbo.

John Jay and Purchase has seven hits each in game two. Cosme Munoz was the lone Bloodhound with multiple hits as he went 2-for-3.

Sarni had another big game for the Panthers in the nightcap going 2-for-4 with a run while batting in the leadoff spot. Phil Georges had three singles and went 3-for-4 with a run and a run batted in.
