Jersey City, N.J.— The John Jay baseball team outhit its opponent 12-8, but left at least one runner on base in seven of nine innings and 12 overall as the Bloodhounds lost a tight one, 4-3, at New Jersey City University (NJCU) on Tuesday afternoon.
The loss leaves John Jay at 4-18 this season, while NJCU improves to 8-7 this year. The game was also a stark contrast to last season when the two teams combined for 47 runs in a 26-21 NJCU win last season.
On Tuesday, the Bloodhounds had five players record two hits each, including a pair from
Yahnny Arias,
Ronald Barillas,
Brian McKenna,
Nestor Amarante and
Eddie Montanez.
Rafael Rodriguez and
Hugo Carvajal recorded a hit each in the game.
The Bloodhounds left the leadoff runner on third in the first inning and the bases loaded in the second inning, and came away with no runs. The host Gothic Knights got on the board with a run in the bottom of the second to take a 1-0 lead.
John Jay tied the score in the top of the third inning when McKenna scored on an RBI single by Montanez.
The Gothic Knights scored a run each in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings to grab a 4-1 lead after seven. The Bloodhounds failed to get another run during that span, and left seven runners on base between the third and seventh innings, including leaving the bases loaded in the sixth.
Still trailing 4-1 heading into the ninth inning, the Bloodhounds scored two runs to pull to within a run and threaten to steal the game from NJCU's grasp. John Jay started the threat by loading the bases with nobody out. Barillas doubled to lead things off before McKenna was hit by the pitch, which led NJCU to make a pitching change. Then Amarante walked to load the bases.
Cosme Munoz reached on a fielder's choice to score the first run. But an NJCU error on the play allowed McKenna to score from second and suddenly John Jay was down just a run with one out. But the game ended when the next batter hit into a double play to end the threat and the game.
NJCU was led by Michael Paterson with three hits, including a double and he scored twice.
Mark Marte suffered the loss for the Bloodhounds after going 7.0 innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits. NJCU's Zack Markle earned the win He went 6.0 innings and allowed a run on 10 hits. Kevin DeMauro earned the save for the Gothic Knights.
