Flushing, N.Y.— The John Jay men's tennis team opened its 2012 home and conference schedule in grand fashion on Tuesday as the Bloodhounds earned their first win of the season with an 8-1 victory over Lehman College at the National Tennis Center.
John Jay is now 1-2 (1-0 CUNYAC) this season, while Lehman drops to 0-6 (0-2 CUNYAC).
The Bloodhounds won No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles by default to lead 2-0 from the outset. Then the Bloodhounds scored a pair of victories in doubles to take a 4-0 lead. In No. 1 doubles,
Erkut Cakmak teamed with
Stephen Walz for an 8-1 win over Lehman's Philip Akogu and Michael Tal. And at No. 2 doubles,
Kelvin Rodriguez and
Andreas Pantaloukas earned an 8-3 win over Marcos Coto-Batres and Ben Cirilo.
In singles play, Cakmak easily earned his third win of the year and improve to 3-0 at No. 1 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Akogu. At No. 3 singles Pantaloukas won 6-1, 6-2 over Coto-Batres. Then at No. 5 singles Rodriguez picked up his first win of the year with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Andreas Restrepo. The last match to finish was No. 4 singles where Walz earned a come from behind win to win in a super tiebreaking third set. After losing 6-3 in the first set, he bounced back to beat his opponent, Cirilo, 7-6 (7-4) to force the super tiebreaker where he won 10-3.
At No. 2 singles, Lehman's Tal was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over
Luis Chirinos.
John Jay returns to action on Wednesday for a match at home against Ramapo College at 3:30 p.m.
