Baseball Returns from Florida with 1-7 Record against Elite Competition

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 Port Charlotte, Fla.—The John Jay baseball team opened their season with a week of games in Florida and the Bloodhounds returned from the Snowbird Classic with a 1-7 overall record against quality opponents.
 
John Jay opened play with a 5-1 win over Massachusetts Maritime Academy on February 26 in the first game of a doubleheader, before losing the next seven games. The seven game losing streak included a game two February 26 loss to Massachusetts Maritime Academy 8-3, a 24-2 defeat to Adrian College on February 29, two losses to Baldwin-Wallace College on March 3 and three losses to Capital University.
 
The Bloodhounds combined for a .257 batting average and were led by freshman Pedro Acosta who batted .438 (7-for-16) with five runs, a triple and three runs batted in. Sophomore Yahnny Arias batted .400 on the trip (8-for-20) with a double, a run batted in and four stolen bases. Fellow sophomore, Corry Harper recorded a .313 batting average (5-for-16) with a pair of doubles. Senior Steven Caracena led the Bloodhounds with five runs batted in.
 
Braylin Perez earned the lone pitching win with a complete game shutout in the opener. Overall he had a 4.50 earned run average. He tossed 12 innings and allowed seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits with five strikeouts. The Bloodhounds had a team earned run average of 14.00 (84 earned runs in 54.0 innings) and allowed 105 hits for an opponent team batting average of .409.
 
“We have a young team and the kids played well,” said John Jay coach Dan Palumbo. “The teams we play in Florida consist of some of the best teams we will play all season.”
 
The remainder of the baseball schedule commences with a game on Tuesday at Drew University at 4 p.m.
