Staten Island, N.Y.— The John Jay baseball team split a pivotal doubleheader on Sunday afternoon with Lehman College. The Bloodhounds lost to the Lightning 4-3 in the first game, before defeating Lehman 11-5 in the nightcap at the College of Staten Island Baseball Complex.
The split keeps John Jay at .500 on the season in City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play with a 3-3 mark. Lehman College is 2-3 in CUNYAC. The two schools are currently tied for fourth in the conference standings.
In the opening game, the two ace pitchers dueled into what was a relatively well pitched game by both pitchers. John Jay's
Braylin Perez allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits and struck out four over seven full innings. Meanwhile Wilfredo Gonzalez from the Lightning allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits, while striking out six to pick up his second win of the season to improve to 2-0 in 2012.
John Jay scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first to jump ahead 2-0.
Yahnny Arias, who led off the inning with a base hit up the middle, scored with two outs on a fielding error by Lehman that would have ended the inning. Then the next batter,
Eddie Montanez blasted a triple to the wall that scored
Nestor Amarante from first base.
But Lehman answered with two runs in the top of the second to tie the score. Lehman's Onix Mejia led off the inning with a double, then scored from third on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Frank Almonte. Then Freddy Parra scored with two outs on a John Jay error to tie the score.
The Bloodhounds took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth on back-to-back doubles by Montanez, his second extra-base hit of the game, and
Corry Harper. Harper's double drove in Montanez to give John Jay the lead.
But Lehman scored a pair of runs in the sixth which eventually gave the Lightning the game one win. Lehman's David Painter singled to lead off the inning. Then while running on the play, advanced to third on a Parra single. Painter then scored from third after a throwing error to second to catch Parra stealing went errant. Then an RBI ground out by Almont scored Parra which turned out to be the game winning run.
John Jay had six hits in the game, but four of them went for extra bases, including a double and triple by Montanez, a double by Harper and double by
Leo Espinal. John Jay also got a single each by Arias and
Owen Kimmel.
Lehman had a pair of hits each by Parra, Painter and Mejia in the first game.
In the second game, Lehman led most of the way, until the Bloodhounds exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to turn a 5-4 deficit into an 11-5 lead and eventual win.
Lehman made five errors in game two, including three in the sixth inning which led to four runs being unearned. Altogether, the Lightning allowed the Bloodhounds seven unearned runs in the contest.
Meanwhile, John Jay played a perfect game on the field, committing no errors for the fourth time this season and the first time in seven games.
Harper, Espinal and
Ronald Barillas had two hits each in game two. Meanwhile eight of the nine parts of the batting order had at least one run batted in, while Arias and Amarante had two.
Lehman had nine hits in the second game, including three by catcher Edwin Marrero who was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs.
Arias picked up the win in relief and was brilliant. He tossed 3.2 innings and allowed no baserunners. He struck out three.
John Jay and Lehman will square off once again on Monday in a non conference affair at Lehman College at 5 p.m.
