Staten Island, N.Y.— The John Jay men's tennis team clinched second place in City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play with a gut wrenching 5-4 win over the College of Staten Island on Thursday afternoon.
The win ends John Jay's conference regular season at 6-1 as the Bloodhounds improve to 7-4 overall.
The host Dolphins had the early advantage after winning two of three in doubles. John Jay's lone victory in doubles was at No. 3 where
Frantisek Demek and
Luis Chirinos were 8-6 winners over Dmitriy Vituk and Austin Kapetabakis. In first doubles,
Erkut Cakmak and
Stephen Walz were defeated by Filip Bubalo and Riad Hamai 8-4. And in No. 2 doubles,
Kelvin Rodriguez and
Andreas Pantaloukas lost to Nicholas Zikos and Oscar Wu 8-2.
But in singles, John Jay won four of the six positions to eke out the win. In No. 1 singles, Cakmak was a 6-3, 7-6 winner over Zikos. Then in No. 4 singles, Rodriguez won via retirement over Kapetanakis, while Walz was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Vituk at No. 5. Then at No. 6, Demek picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win over Wu.
CSI won at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. At No. 2, Hamai beat Pantaloukas 6-2, 6-3 and at No. 3 Bubalo won 6-0, 6-0 over Chirinos.
John Jay returns to action on Saturday for a match at SUNY Pirchase.
