Brooklyn, N.Y.— The John Jay baseball team was eliminated from the 2012 CUNYAC / MCU Championship on Friday evening as the Bloodhounds lost two games. John Jay lost 15-4 Baruch in the winner's bracket game before falling 8-1 to the College of Staten Island in the second elimination game.
John Jay is now 9-29 with a couple of regular season games to go. College of Staten Island and Baruch College will vie for the championship for the third year in a row on Saturday.
In the first game of the day, John Jay laced 13 hits and eight of the nine batters in the lineup recorded at least one hit. But all nine starters for Baruch recorded at least one hit, and seven of those nine had at least two in the affair. John Jay had 13 hits, while Baruch had 20.
The Bloodhounds led 4-2 as Baruch came to bat in the bottom of the fifth. But the Bearcats scored 13 runs between the fifth and eighth innings to take control of the contest and give themselves the inside track to the championship.
Yahnny Arias led John Jay with three hits against Baruch, while
Corry Harper,
Brian McKenna and
Cosme Munoz had two each.
Thomas Daly had three hits for Baruch, including a homerun in the fifth inning.
In the second elimination game, CSI, who defeated Lehman College in the first elimination game earlier in the day to stay alive, defeated the Bloodhounds in the second elimination game to keep their championship hopes alive.
CSI scored one run each in the first, second and third innings to go ahead 3-0 after three frames. The Dolphins then put up a four spot in the fourth to take a 7-0 advantage in the fourth.
With CSI leading 8-0 heading into the eighth, the Bloodhounds broke the shutout bid up when pinch hitter
Justin Martinez scored on a bases loaded walk by fellow pinch hitter
Joel Cabrera.
Arias had another three hits in the second game of the day, while reserve player
Hugo Carvajal went 2-for-2 after being inserted into the lineup in the eighth inning.
Henry Roman went 3-for-4 for CSI, while Bryan Moreno and Luis Ortiz had two hits each for the Dolphins.
