Men's Soccer Loses High Scoring Game at NJCU

JERSEY CITY, N.J.— The John Jay men's soccer team was defeated by New Jersey City University (NJCU) 6-4 at Robert McNulty Field on Monday afternoon.
 
The loss snaps John Jay's two match unbeaten streak at two games. The loss also marks John Jay's first loss to the Gothic Knights after beating them for the first time in program history last season.
 
After the hosts took a 1-0 lead, John Jay rallied back with a pair of goals to take a 2-1 lead. First, Justin Orsino netted a goal at 9:56 before Navid Allah Morad put one in the net at 18:19 via a free kick.
 
The Gothic Knights though scored two more goals, both off the foot of Raphael Araujo,  in the latter portion of the first half to take a 3-2 lead at halftime.
 
NJCU took a 4-2 lead early in the second half on a goal by Marco Avella. But the game was far from over as John Jay came back with two more goals to tie the score. Christ Assou netted a goal at 27:47 into the second half to cut the Bloodhound deficit in half. Then Wilson Quinde tied the game with a goal with just over fifteen minutes to go, and the score was 4-4.
 
But NJCU scored two more times in the closing minutes of the contest to win. The game winner was scored just 70 seconds after Quinde's game tying strike. The Gothic Knights added an insurance goal with 2:17 remaining to secure the win.
 
The Bloodhounds were outshot 29-13 in the contest, including 11-6 in shots on net. Starting goalkeeper Vitecha Kochaon played the first 72:47 of the contest and made two saves and allowed four goals. Steven Merino made three saves and allowed two goals over the final 17:13 of the contest.
 
Kevin Fuentes played the first half for the Gothic Knights and made one save, while allowing two goals. Sheldon Parkinson played net in the second half and made no saves, allowing in both shots he faced.
 
John Jay returns to action on Wednesday for a conference game against Medgar Evers College at 7 p.m. at Aviator Field.
