Women's Basketball Loses to Hunter in Overtime

NEW YORK, N.Y.— The John Jay women's basketball team lost a heartbreaker in overtime as the Bloodhounds were defeated by Hunter College 62-59 in overtime at Hunter Wednesday evening.
 
John Jay falls to 11-10 (8-4 CUNYAC), while Hunter improves to 8-13 (7-5 CUNYAC).
 
The Bloodhounds led nearly the entire game during regulation time. John Jay took the lead for good in regulation with 12:27 to go in the first half on a jumper by Victoria Story who was the only Bloodhound to score in double figures with 19.
 
Story's field goal came in the midst of a 10-0 John Jay run that put the Bloodhounds up 15-8 with 11:23 to go.
 
John Jay led by as much as 11 in the first half and led by that amount three times in the opening period before going into halftime with an eight point lead as the Bloodhounds were up 32-24 at the break.
 
Early in the second half, John Jay extended its lead to 17 at one point as the Bloodhounds were up 47-30 with 13:05 to play. A jumper by Jamecia Forsythe, who had seven points and a game-high 19 rebounds, capped the spurt that gave the Bloodhounds their biggest lead of the night.
 
But Hunter outscored John Jay 17-3 over the next eight minutes to pull to within three with just over five minutes to play.
 
John Jay never lost the lead, and stayed in front until just over six seconds remaining when the Hawks tied the score at 56-56 en route to sending the game into overtime.
 
In the extra session, John Jay did not connect on a field goal attempt and went 3-for-6 from the free throw line. Hunter went 2-for-6 from the floor and 2-for-4 from the charity stripe to outlast the Bloodhounds and even the two-game series this season.
 
Both teams played spectacular defense keeping each other under thirty percent shooting from the field. The Bloodhounds shot 20-for-68 from the floor (29.4 percent), while Hunter made 20-of-73 (27.4 percent).
 
Hunter held a 60-53 advantage in rebounding and had a team-high 12 from Ayanna Hudson. Meanwhile Nicole Lenard led all scorers with 22 points and nine rebounds. Dimitra Thomopoulos had 18 points and eight rebounds, while Kristen Sells had a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds.
 
Aneska Tejada had nine points and seven rebounds off the bench for the Bloodhounds, while Kaitlin Fitzgerald had nine points and two blocked shots.
 
John Jay is back in action on Saturday for a home game against York College at 4 p.m.
