Box Score The men's soccer team fell to the College of Staten Island, 5-1, on Wednesday evening at the CSI Soccer Complex. The Bloodhounds drop to 2-9-1 overall (2-2 in CUNYAC) and the Dolphins improve to 4-8-1 overall (2-1 in CUNYAC).
The game started off with high intensity as both teams saw their fare share of scoring opportunities. Early on, the first half was relatively even as the game was scoreless for the first fifteen minutes. However, CSI got on the board first with a goal by Alfonso Castaneda. John Jay responded right away as senior
Besian Shala scored on a long shot from the left side. Shala has now scored in two consecutive games and three of the last four.
Staten Island closed out the first half adding two more goals to give them a 3-1 lead. The second half saw CSI outscoring the Bloodhounds 2-0 and taking the conference game by a score of 5-1.
Shala finished with a team-high 3 shots. Junior
Drew Guerra and Shala recorded two shots on goal. Senior
Steven Merino made 10 saves on the night.
The Dolphins were led by Castaneda, who finished with two goals and an assist. Ali Fares contributed with two assists and John Gioeli made four saves for the win.
"Tonight was a tough matchup against a very good CSI team," head coach Nathan Bell said. "We played tough but were unable to execute when it counted."
The Bloodhounds will head to Lehman on Saturday, October 5 at 1:00pm.
