The women's swim team won its first meet of the season, 53-39, against the College of New Rochelle on Friday evening at John Jay's pool. The Bloodhounds start the season 1-0 (0-0 in CUNYAC) and the Blue Angels fall to 0-1.

"The swim team had a great opening meet," head coach Jessica Kolackovsky said. "With new freshman, including Veronika Savina, Alyssa DeVito, and Andrea Antoni the team is stronger than it's ever been. Veronika had an outstanding meet and Alyssa swam her way to victory."

John Jay finished in first place in twelve of the thirteen races. The Bloodhounds won both the 200 Medley Relay and 200 Free Relay, the first and last event, respectively.

Freshman Veronika Savina began her collegiate debut with two first place wins in the 200 freestyle (2:28.40) and 100 breaststroke (1:16.96). Sophomore Kaylie Bruce also finished in first in the 100 backstroke (1:20.46) and 200 Individual Midley (2:52.67).

Junior Vanessa Toro-Plaza led the way in the 50 freestyle with a time of 29:49. Freshman newcomers Alyssa DeVito won the 1000 freestyle (13:43.02) and Victoria Hsieh won her race finishing with a time of 1:04.50 in the 100 freestyle. Senior Nathalie Cuellar took first place in the 500 freestyle with a time of 7:16.86.

In the 200 Medley Relay, Cuellar, Savina, Hsieh, and Toro-Plaza were victorious as they finished with a time of 2:13.91.

"With intense training behind them, I have the upmost confidence that the team can medal at championships this year," said Kolackovsky. "After seeing tonight's performance, I am extremely excited about the season ahead and the accomplishments these athletes will achieve both individually and as a team."

The swim team will look to extend their win streak when they head to Staten Island on Friday, November 1 for a meet at 6:00pm.
