Women's Soccer Loses in CUNYAC Semifinals to Staten Island

Box Score The #4 women's soccer team fell to #1 College of Staten Island, 3-0, in the CUNYAC/Applebee's Semifinals on Wednesday afternoon at Brooklyn College Field.

The Bloodhounds finish the season with a 4-15 overall record (3-3 in CUNYAC) and the Dolphins improve to 16-1-2 (6-0 in CUNYAC).

For the first twenty minutes of the half, the Bloodhounds played stingy defense and limited Dolphin scoring opportunities. However in the 24th minute, CSI's Demi-Jean Martorano capitalized on a Bloodhound turnover and found the back of the net to give Staten Island an early 1-0 lead. The rest of the half featured even play and John Jay went into halftime, down by one.

Sophomore Katelyn Davis played goalkeeper as sophomore Andrea Antoni was injured. In the first half, Davis recorded 13 saves on 22 shots. The Bloodhounds registered three shots in the half.

Staten Island added a goal early on in the second half to go up by two. John Jay increased the pressure but was unable to break through the Dolphins defenders. Martorano scored the third goal of the game, which sealed the deal for CSI.

Davis finished with a remarkable 20 saves. Sophomore Stephanie Caceres led the Bloodhounds with two shots on goal.  

"Going in, we knew it was going to be a very tough game," head coach Kamal Haruna said. "Despite losing some of our girls to injury, I am very proud of the team's success."

Staten Island advances to the Championship game where they will face the winner of #2 Brooklyn and #3 CCNY.
