The Big Apple Air Rifle Championship was the brainchild of Major (then Captain) Dorian Germany of SUNY Maritime College. It is open to all collegiate shooting teams in the Tri-State Metropolitan area. Colleges from New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut are eligible. For the 6 years that the Championship has been in existence, John Jay has won every tournament. Because of the rivalry, the real competition is against SUNY Maritime. The head and assistant rifle coach at Maritime both shot for Coach
Vince Maiorino when he was a NCAA Division I coach at St. John's University.
