Softball Loses Both Games in Season Opening Doubleheader at Old Westbury

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y.— The John Jay softball team opened its 2013 season on Friday and the Bloodhounds were swept in a doubleheader by the College at Old Westbury, losing the first game 10-2 in six innings, and the second game 14-2 in five innings.
 
With the two losses, John Jay is 0-2 this season, while Old Westbury is 4-2 overall.
 
John Jay was led by Kaylee Fry who was a combined 3-for-5, with a double, a homerun and three runs batted in. Fellow teammate Ashley Kersting was 3-for-6 with a double. She was 1-for-3 with a double in game one, and 2-for-3 with a run in game two.
 
In the first game, the host Panthers scored two runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead. Old Westbury scored again in the third and had two more runs in the fourth and fifth to go ahead 7-0 after five innings.
 
The Bloodhounds got on the board in the top of the sixth with their first two runs of the season as Fry blasted a two out, two-run homer to right field to make the score 7-2.
 
But Old Westbury tacked on three runs in the bottom of the frame to win it in the bottom of the sixth.
 
John Jay had five hits in game one, including two by Fry and one each by Kersting, Leeann Rosa and Jennifer Vorela.
 
Sara McKenna suffered the game one loss. She pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed 10 runs (nine earned) on 15 hits.
 
In game two, John Jay scored a run in the top of the first to lead 1-0. A double to centerfield by Fry scored Kersting, who led off the game with a single down the leftfield line.
 
But Old Westbury answered with two runs in the bottom of the first and four in the bottom of the second to take a 6-1 lead after two innings.
 
The Bloodhounds scored a run in the top of the fourth when a two out single by Jasmine Guerra scored McKenna.
 
But Old Westbury sent 14 batters to the plate in the bottom half and scored eight runs to take a 12 run lead.
 
The Bloodhounds did not score in the top of the next half inning as the game ended.
 
Kersting had two hits in the second game, while Fry, McKenna and Guerra had a hit each.
 
Rosa suffered the loss after tossing four innings and allowing 14 runs (13 earned) on 11 hits.
 
Old Westbury was led by Jacqui Alvarado who was 3-for-4 with four runs batted in.
 
John Jay returns to action on Wednesday March 20 for a doubleheader at Purchase College at 3:30 p.m.
