Baseball Loses Both Games of Doubleheader to Purchase

WEST HARRISON, N.Y.— The John Jay baseball team was defeated in both games of a doubleheader on Saturday as the Bloodhounds lost to Purchase College 13-0 and 20-0 at Silver Lake Park.
 
The loss leaves the Bloodhounds at 0-6 this season, while Purchase College ups its record to 3-4.
 
The Panthers, who served as the visiting team, scored three runs in the first inning of game one to go ahead 3-0. Purchase scored another two in the second frame as the Panthers led 5-0 after two innings.
 
After scoreless innings in the third and fourth, Purchase tacked on two in the fifth, four in the sixth and two in the seventh en route to the win.
 
John Jay was held to three hits in the opener, including one each by first year players Joe Jacobsen, Nick Gioia and Esteban Soler.
 
The Panthers registered 20 hits in game one, including three by Michael Skoller who was 3-for-5 with a double, two runs and a run batted in, Ronald Echavairra who was 3-for-4 while falling just a triple shy of batting for the cycle, with two runs and two runs batted in, and Colin Morris who was 3-for-4 with a run and two runs batted in.
 
Purchase also got a big offensive performance by Josh Spielberg who had three runs batted in.
 
Alex DePasquale suffered the game one loss after going six full innings and allowing 11 runs on 18 hits.
 
Miller Ludlow of Purchase College picked up the complete game shutout after going seven full innings and striking out four batters.
 
In game two, Purchase sent 11 batters to the plate and scored seven runs in the first inning. The Panthers proceeded to score at least one run in each inning in the five inning snow shortened contest.
 
Spielberg had another good game, going 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles and runs batted in. John Jonas was 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and three runs batted in, while Daniel Stroud was 2-for-3 with a run and three runs batted in for Purchase.
 
Purchase starting pitcher Mitchell Paz did not allow a hit in game two, en route to earning the win. He pitched five innings and walked five.
 
John Jay returns to action on Tuesday for a game against Stevens Institute of Technology at 3:30 p.m. at Narrows Field in Brooklyn.
