STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.— The John Jay baseball team lost a pair of games to defending conference champion Baruch College on Sunday, losing the first game 3-0 and the second game 3-1, a the College of Staten Island Baseball Complex.
In the first game, John Jay got a well pitched game from junior ace starter
Braylin Perez who went the distance and allowed three runs on six hits, while striking out a season-high 10 batters.
The Bloodhounds had four hits in the opener, including two from
Luca Altamirano who was 2-for-4 with a double, and one each from
Ryan Corrigan and
Jose Fernandez who were both 1-for-3.
Baruch's six hits, included a pair of singles by John Yuksekol, and one single each by Jasdeep Buttar, Nicholas Pomo-Roman, Angel Tejada and Richard Valerio.
The Bearcats three runs all came in the sixth inning breaking a scoreless tie. With the bases loaded and one out, a walk drawn by Yuksekol forced in Buttar, who led off the inning with a single, Baruch's only hit of the inning. Then the next batter, Eric Ulino, was hit by the pitch to force home Pomo-Roman, who was also hit by a pitch that inning to get on base. Then a sacrifice bunt by Matthew Ballone scored Philip Loprete who got on base after drawing a walk. Overall in the sixth, Baruch had two players walk and two others get hit by pitches to highlight the frame.
Baruch's Paul Perez went the distance, en route to the complete game shutout. He pitched 7.0 innings and allowed no runs on four hits and struck out three batters.
In game two, starting pitcher Alexander Depasquale pitched a solid game, allowing three runs, but none of which were earned.
Baruch scored a run in the third and two in the fourth, capitalizing on John Jay miscues. In the third inning, Ulino led off the inning with a single. He advanced to third on a pair of passed balls, before scoring on an RBI single by Keith Ezersky, who was 4-for-4 in game two. He accounted for four of Baruch's six hits in game two.
Then in the fifth inning, Pomo-Roman led off by reaching on an error. He scored from third moments later on a sacrifice fly by Loprete. Then a balk with two outs by Depasquale forced Yuksekol home from third base.
John Jay broke the shutout bid with a run in the bottom half of the seventh.
Billy Moran, who was 2-for-3 in game two, reached on an infield single to start the frame. He then scored moments later on an infield hit by pinch hitter
Daniel Alegria.
The Bloodhounds got a 2-for-3 performance by
Dennis Lopez, plus a hit each by Corrigan and Steve Donato.
John Jay outhit Baruch 8-6 in the second game.
Baruch starting pitcher Andrew Lizardi picked up the game two win by allowing one run on eight hits and striking out six.
John Jay returns to action on Tuesday for a game against New Jersey City University at 3:30 p.m.
